August means more than just hot days and long hauls. It is also the start of a new school year in many communities. For professional drivers, that means adjusting to changing road conditions, increased traffic, and new safety considerations.
At Fraley & Schilling, safety is one of our core values, and that extends beyond our drivers to the communities we serve. Here’s what every driver should keep in mind as school gets back in session.
1. Expect heavier morning and afternoon traffic
School zones often mean slower speeds, crossing guards, and buses making frequent stops. Plan for extra travel time during peak drop-off and pick-up hours.
Tip: Use trip planning tools to avoid routes with multiple schools or heavy pedestrian activity during those times.
2. School bus safety: know the rules
The law is clear. When a school bus has its stop arm extended and lights flashing, all traffic in both directions must stop on two-lane roads. On multi-lane roads, traffic traveling the same direction must stop.
Violations not only carry heavy fines but can endanger children.
3. Watch for pedestrians and cyclists
With school back in session, expect more kids walking or biking along roadways. They may cross unexpectedly or without looking. Stay alert, especially near neighborhoods and crosswalks.
4. Avoid distracted driving
Even a moment’s distraction can have serious consequences in school zones. Put phones away, minimize in-cab distractions, and keep your focus fully on the road.
5. Use defensive driving in school zones
-Slow down well before entering a school zone
-Anticipate sudden stops
-Maintain extra space around your truck
A shared responsibility
Professional drivers play a huge role in keeping our roads safe for the youngest members of our community. By staying alert, planning ahead, and practicing defensive driving, we can all help ensure students get to and from school safely.
At Fraley & Schilling, we are proud of our drivers’ professionalism and commitment to safety every mile, every day.
